Complement-Mediated Kidney Diseases: A Case Based Presentation

Kidney & Urology Foundation of America (KUFA) hosted a dinner program for 90 adult and pediatric academic and community nephrologists and nephrology fellows from Boston and the New England area that focused on the emerging knowledge and interest in atypical Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (aHUS) and complement mediated kidney diseases. “Complement-Mediated Kidney Diseases: A Case Based Presentation” was held at the Lenox Hotel on Thursday, November 14, 2013.

Joseph Bonventre, MD, PhD, Chief, Renal Division, Brigham & Women’s Hospital and Samuel A. Levine Professor of Medicine, Department of Medicine, Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA, and David J. Salant, MD, Chief, Section of Nephrology; Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Boston University School of Medicine, Boston, MA served as Program Co-Chairs and Moderators.

Michael Somers, MD, Director, Clinical Services, Division of Nephrology, Boston Children’s Hospital presented on a case of a child with recurrent aHUS post kidney transplant. Kenneth Lieberman, MD, Chief, Pediatric Nephrology, Hackensack University Medical Center, Hackensack, NJ was discussant for this case and presented an overview of aHUS. The second case presentation was offered by James Strom, MD, Chief of Nephrology, St. Elizabeth's Medical Center and Professor of Medicine, Tufts University School of Medicine on a case of an adult with C3 Glomerulopathy. Joel Henderson, MD, PhD, Assistant Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Boston University School of Medicine, Boston MA presented and discussed pathology findings. Martha Pavlakis, MD, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center also shared an interesting case with the audience. Dr. Salant coordinated the presentations and discussions.

A reception preceded the program which began at 7pm and concluded at 9:20 pm.
